Animal By-Laws

Our Officers are required by law to attend all calls of by-law violations; even if the call is the result of an unfounded accusation or “neighbour dispute”, we must respond.

Investigations are made to determine the outcome for by-law infractions, whether it is to inform the owner of possible unknown issues (dogs that bark when the owner is absent) or to issue Provincial Offences Act (POA) Fines to repeat offenders.

When reporting a by-law violation, we do require your name and a phone number; if we require further information from you, as the complainant, we need a way to contact you. Your information is always kept confidential.

The most common by-law issue reported is dog barking.

Animal by-laws for the City of Cambridge are divided into two separate entities:
Dog Bylaws 172-13 & Non-Dog By-laws 171-13

Excerpts from the Cambridge City By-law 172-13 (Dogs):

Section 6.1: No Running at Large: states that “No person shall allow a dog to run at large in the City.”

Section 6.2: Leash and Control: states that “Every dog owner shall ensure that his or her dog is under leash and effective control of an adult person (18+), or under the effective control of a child who has an adult present with that child at all times, when off the premises of the owner.”

Section 6.6: Prohibition Against Trespassing: states that “No owner of a dog shall permit it to trespass upon any private property.”

Section 6.7: Removal and Disposal of Excrement: Every owner of a dog shall immediately remove and dispose of any excrement left by the dog on any property in the City other than the owner’s property.
